PREVENTIVE MEDICINE:

YOUR CAT BENEFITS FROM ANNUAL CHECKUPS

Regular checkups can benefit both you and your cat by catching early signs of illnesses and health problems. Kittens and cats do their best to conceal any physical problems and early detection during an examination can often save your pet from unnecessary suffering, and save you money with early treatment.

During a checkup we examine:

  • Heart – to detect murmurs
  • Lungs – to listen for any unusual sounds
  • Abdomen – to feel for signs of pain, or abnormal size and shape of various organs
  • Eyes – to detect early signs of eye problems, including cataracts in older cats
  • Ears – to check for infection or parasites
  • Teeth – to look for gum disease or tooth injuries
  • Weight – to track possible obesity or unexplained weight loss
  • Skin and Coat – to look for external parasites, bacterial, and fungal infections
  • Musculoskeletal system – for signs of injury or illness

Your cat won’t tell you if he or she feels unwell but we certainly can after examining them! During the annual checkup, you will have the opportunity to ask advice about feeding, behavioural problems, or any concerns you may have about your cat.

vaccine & parasite control

Your Pet’s Needs Include Vaccinations and Flea and Parasite Control

Vaccinations protect our cats from fatal diseases, while proper flea and deworming keep your cat happy and parasite free.

The core vaccination program should be started when your kitten is 8 weeks old, usually during his or her first checkup. Booster vaccines will be required to reach proper immunity.

Current vaccination programs consist of what is often referred to as the “Basic” and most important vaccine, FVRCPC. This combination vaccine helps to prevent four of the most common and contagious upper-respiratory tract infections such as:

  • Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR) –This virus is not fatal but can cause severe respiratory issues. It causes yellow ocular and nasal discharge, sneezing, drooling, fever, and lethargy.
  • Feline Calici Virus (FCV) –This virus has many different strains of varying virulence. Commonly it can cause oral ulcers, fever, sneezing, and nasal discharge.
  • Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV) – This disease, also known as Feline Distemper, is contagious and often fatal. It is spread through contaminated water or food and can severely weaken the immune system and internal organs.
  • Feline Chlamydia –This infection is not the same as Chlamydiosis in humans. It is a bacterial infection that can cause persistent reoccurring corneal ulcers.

Other vaccinations are also available and may be suitable for your cat, depending upon their current lifestyle:

  • Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) – This retrovirus is transmitted through direct contact with saliva or secretions, and causes immune suppression over time. This disease is terminal once contracted.
  • Rabies – This disease can cause aggression, fever, paralysis and death. This disease is dangerous because it can be passed from species to species, including humans.

Flea control comes in both oral and topical formulations; the choice depends on your pet’s lifestyle and potential for exposure. Parasite testing and deworming takes place during your cat’s annual checkup. We will advise you on the best steps to take to keep your cat happy and parasite‐free.

Surgical Procedures

Spaying, Neutering, and Surgical Procedures are Available

Spaying and neutering are the most common surgical procedures performed at our hospital; they involve the removal of the reproductive organs to reduce sexual behaviours and aggression. This procedure minimizes the risk of health problems and helps to prevent cat overpopulation.

  • Spaying – the removal of the uterus and ovaries in female cats
  • Neutering – the removal of the testicles in male cats

Other types of surgeries are sometimes needed:

Soft tissue surgery – These are procedures that are not associated with bone, such as the removal of masses or lumps to make sure they aren’t cancerous.

Orthopedic surgery – These are procedures that are associated with bones, such as leg or hip fractures, hip dysplasia, disc disease, and so on.

Insertion of cat microchips – ensures easy identification if your pet is ever lost. It is a simple and quick procedure that does not require anaesthetic.
