5 Dog-friendly Beaches in Vancouver and Burnaby BC! Plus, a Few General Tips for Owners

With the weather warming up, we’re seeing many dog owners who are eyeballing the local beaches to take their four-legged friends for a day of fun in the sun! Whether your dog is an avid swimmer or prefers to dig in the sand, the beach is a great place to spend a warm day with your four-legged friend. Of course, keep in mind that not all beaches allow dogs. So, to help you pick your summer waterfront destinations, here’s a list of 5 dog-friendly beaches in Vancouver and Burnaby BC to try visiting this year!

1. Spanish Banks Extension

Located on the westernmost point of Spanish Banks is the Spanish Banks extension. This part of the shoreline has a large, off-leash dog area, perfect for letting your pup run around and make new friends by the sea! This is a quieter area, which makes it perfect for getting away from Vancouver’s hustle and bustle for a calm, relaxing day at the beach. Plus, this is one of the best spots in town to see the sunset—how’s that for a win-win?

2. Trout Lake

John Hendry Park, better known as Trout Lake, is one of the most popular spots for dog owners to spend a summer day. The off-leash area is located at the lake’s northern end, but dogs on their leashes are welcome throughout the entire park. Be aware that this is a happening spot in summertime, so be sure that your pup is ready to be around lots of new people, delicious smells, and other dogs. There’s also a farmer’s market in the park on Saturdays in the summer, making it a great spot to go for a pet-friendly picnic!

3. Kitsilano Point

Located at Hadden Park, near the Vancouver Maritime Museum, Kits Point is one of the area’s best off-leash dog hangouts. It offers a large area for dogs to run, play, and explore, and you’ll be steps away from stunning views of Downtown, English Bay, and the North Shore Mountains from Kits Beach.

4. Sunset Beach Park

Located directly across False Creek from Hadden Park, Sunset Beach Park is another beautiful spot to enjoy a summer afternoon with your dog. Start with an on-leash stroll down the seawall, taking in the sights of English Bay, and then make your way to the park’s large off-leash area. Located just a few blocks from Vancouver’s West End, Sunset Beach is a great place to take in the summer weather with your dog when you don’t have too much time.

5. Barnet Marine Park

Located at the foot of the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area, just before Port Moody, Barnet Marine Park is a hidden gem for dog owners looking for a pup-friendly beach. Not only does this park have a great trail network and some stunning picnic spots, but it also has a large off-leash area for your dog to run, play, and make some new friends. All the while, you’ll be taking in views of the beautiful Belcarra mountains across the Burrard Inlet—perfect for a sunset adventure.

Tips for a Great Beach Day with Your Dog

There are so many great spots to enjoy the beach with your pup in the Vancouver and Burnaby neighbourhoods. With a few beach safety tips and suggestions, you’ll ensure a safe, happy, and fun summer day with your pup every time! Here are a few ideas:

Always Check Beach Rules

Dogs love swimming and playing at the beach, but no one likes an inconsiderate dog owner. Always check if a beach allows dogs and whether or not they must be leashed before bringing your pup along.

Know the Signs of Heatstroke and Come Prepared

Heatstroke is a condition that develops when a dog’s body temperature gets too high. It’s not uncommon for pups to suffer from heatstroke in the summer because they’re covered in fur and aren’t able to sweat. To keep your dog safe, make sure to set up in an area where they have access to shade and lots of water. Know the signs of heatstroke, and make sure your pup gets somewhere cool as soon as you start noticing symptoms.

Consider Dog-Safe Sunscreen

Believe it or not, some dogs can get sunburnt! In particular, dogs with lighter coloured fur coats or who have just been shaved are more vulnerable to direct sunshine. So if you plan to spend a long day at the beach, it may be worth getting some special, dog-safe sunscreen. Dogs with lightly pigmented noses are particularly vulnerable. Your vet can advise you if you have concerns about what to buy.

Bring Plenty of Water

Whether you’re planning to be at the beach for a day or an hour, it’s essential to practice good summer safety. One of the most important things is to have plenty of water and a way for your dog to drink it. We suggest packing a big jug (at least a couple of litres) and a collapsible bowl, which will ensure your dog doesn’t run out and go thirsty. Also, be sure that your dog doesn’t drink any seawater, as this can make them very sick.

Don’t Let Your Pup Eat Sand

Some dogs love eating sand, as well as other things on the weird side, which you can read more about in our previous blog post. While it’s not the end of the world if your pup gets a little sand in their mouth as they’re digging around, don’t allow them to ingest too much as this can be hazardous to their digestive health needing emergency care. Try offering them chew toys and treats instead.

Steer Clear of Hot Beaches

Making your dog walk on a hot beach in the heat of a summer day can lead to painful burns on their paw pads. We suggest doing these walks in the morning or evening, when the ground is cooler, or investing in special booties to protect your pup’s sensitive paws.

Be Aware of Marine Hazards

Although the beach is generally quite a safe place for pups to roam and explore, there are a few hazards to be aware of, including washed-up jellyfish, crabs, and sea urchins. Also, make sure your dog doesn’t swim too far out in the ocean, as invisible currents and riptides could make it difficult for them to swim back.

Have Fun in the Sun with Your Dog

With these dog-friendly beaches and tips for pet owners, you’re all set to enjoy a warm, relaxing, and fun summer with your four-legged friend! Always refer to local rules and signs, as some regulations about leash requirements may change from time to time. By obeying these rules, you ensure these beautiful beaches can continue to be enjoyed by dogs from across Vancouver, Burnaby, and beyond!
